The Origin and History of Matcha: From Ancient China to Global Trend

While matcha is widely associated with Japanese culture today, its roots trace back over a thousand years to ancient China. Understanding the history of matcha helps appreciate the craftsmanship behind this premium green tea powder.

Origins in Tang and Song Dynasty China

During the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) in China, tea leaves were steamed and compressed into tea bricks for storage and trade. The tea was prepared by roasting and pulverizing the brick, then simmering the resulting tea powder in hot water with salt.

During the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD), the method of making powdered tea from steam-prepared dried tea leaves, and preparing the beverage by whipping the powder and hot water together in a bowl, became popular. This preparation method is the direct ancestor of modern matcha.

Introduction to Japan by Zen Monks

In 1191, the Zen monk Eisai returned to Japan from China, bringing tea seeds and the Song Dynasty method of preparing powdered tea. He planted the seeds at a temple in Kyoto, which became the birthplace of Japanese tea culture. Eisai wrote the first Japanese book on tea, praising its medicinal and spiritual benefits for Zen meditation.

Evolution of the Japanese Tea Ceremony

Over the centuries, Japanese tea masters refined the preparation of powdered tea into a highly ritualized spiritual practice known as Chanoyu (the Japanese Tea Ceremony). The focus shifted to mindfulness, harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility, cementing matcha's status as a premium, revered beverage.

Modern Global Revival

Today, matcha has transcended traditional ceremonies to become a global culinary sensation. Modern manufacturing techniques combine ancient shading and stone-grinding traditions with state-of-the-art food safety standards to supply high-quality matcha to global markets.
